Assembly of a fascinating project: Wonderwoods Utrecht


Two unique green towers of 105 and 70 meters high are being built within walking distance of Utrecht Central Station, known as the Wonderwoods project. After completion, the towers will offer a mix of living, working, relaxation, culture and catering. The realisation is in the hands of Construction Combination Wonderwoods (Boele & van Eesteren | Kondor Wessels Amsterdam). More than two years after the start of the project, the towers are now really starting to take shape.

LOGISTIC CHALLENGES

For the execution of the construction a dedicated project team has been put together for each tower. We supply and assemble a total of almost 470 tonnes of steel for the project. This includes parts for the curtain walling, the atrium and the walkway. We also supply and mount the steel sheet concrete floors of the atrium and the walkway. Wonderwoods is part of the redevelopment of the Railway Station area in Utrecht, the largest inner-city construction project in the Netherlands. Construction in the city center is very challenging in terms of planning and logistics. Due to the limited space on the construction site, loads must be delivered Just In Time.

GREEN INSIDE AND OUT

One tower – designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti – will have a vertical forest with plants on the balconies and facades, inspired by species that occur in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. The other tower was designed by MVSA Architects and has a lot of greenery on the inside, with a large atrium and winter gardens along the facades. The towers will house approximately 420 rental and owner-occupied homes for various target groups, 14,000 square meters of office space and 7,500 square meters of commercial functions, an underground parking garage and an indoor bicycle shed. Construction of Wonderwoods is expected to be completed by mid-2024.
