Severfield Steel Construction Netherlands recently received an order from BAM Infra Nederland to supply the steelwork for the 2GW (Gigawatt) IJmuiden Ver Bèta converter station on the Maasvlakte. Construction of one of the first converter stations for TenneT started in April. The new station will be located in the middle of the port of Rotterdam, right next to APM Terminals Maasvlakte II.
Converter stations form the link between offshore wind farms and the national high-voltage grid. In the converter station, direct current is converted to alternating current and the voltage is transformed from 525 kV to 380 kV, making it suitable for the Dutch high-voltage grid. TenneT will be working with various construction companies to build several of these converter stations by 2030.

The parties involved are jointly constructing the buildings, building-related installations and site layout for these land stations. In collaboration with BAM Infra Nederland, we are supplying and assembling the steel structures. The civil engineering work is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
With TenneT's innovative 2GW Programme, Europe is taking an important step towards becoming the first continent in the world to achieve climate neutrality. The 2GW approach – with a single cable system, a single platform design and a single contract form – ensures a more efficient, faster and more sustainable realisation of converter stations. Thanks to TenneT's new approach, more electricity will soon be able to be transported from sea to land at the same time.
