Severfield Europe has commenced assembly of the steel structure for the 2GW converter station IJmuiden Ver Bèta at Maasvlakte. Commissioned by BAM Infra Nederland, we are supplying the steelwork for this converter station, which is part of TenneT's 2GW programme. With this project, we are contributing to the development of a future-proof energy and energy-independent infrastructure in the Netherlands.
With the 2GW programme, TenneT is bringing wind energy from the sea ashore more efficiently and sustainably. The converter station on the Maasvlakte converts direct current generated by the IJmuiden Ver Beta and IJmuiden Ver Gamma offshore wind farms into alternating current for the Dutch high-voltage grid. This makes it a crucial hub in the future energy supply.
Completion of the civil engineering work is scheduled for the end of 2027, followed by the installation of the electrical components. The converter station is expected to be operational in 2029.

About TenneT's 2GW Programme
TenneT's 2GW programme is an initiative to efficiently transport large amounts of offshore wind energy to land. Instead of the traditional 700 MW and 900 MW connections, this programme uses 2 gigawatt (GW) HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology. This means:
Converter stations, such as the one on the Maasvlakte, convert the direct current generated by offshore wind farms into alternating current for the Dutch high-voltage grid. This infrastructure is crucial for achieving climate targets and strengthening the energy supply of the future.
