Severfield is supplying steel for the Breda high-voltage substation

Severfield is contributing to the modular redevelopment of the 150 kV high-voltage substation in Breda. Commissioned by Croonwolter&dros, we are supplying the steel structures – including the gantries – which form the backbone of this future-proof substation. The project is a collaboration between Croonwolter&dros and Mobilis, commissioned by TenneT, and is being carried out in close cooperation with other partners.

A crucial role in the energy transition

The high-voltage substation in Breda is a vital link in the regional power grid. TenneT is replacing the substation as part of the national Bay Replacement Programme, a large-scale programme that replaces ageing high-voltage substations using a standardised, modular approach.

Modular construction requires precision

One of the key principles of the Bay Replacement Programme is the use of a standardised modular design. Prefabrication plays a key role in this: components are manufactured in advance as far as possible to reduce on-site construction time, improve quality and minimise disruption to the local area and grid users. For Severfield, this means that our steel structures must fit perfectly with the standardised substation design.

Technical and logistical challenge

The site in Breda leaves little room for error. During construction, the station must remain fully operational to ensure that the region’s energy supply is not interrupted. Our steel structures are therefore delivered in close coordination with the construction team: at the right time, in the right order, and ready for assembly.

Building a reliable energy grid

The project in Breda will run from 2022 to 2028. Once this renewed substation is completed, the reliability of the regional 150 kV grid will be enhanced and the facility will be ready for future capacity expansions.
