BAM Infra Nederland has commissioned Severfield Steel Construction Netherlands to supply and install the steelwork for the new 2GW IJmuiden Ver Bèta converter station on the Maasvlakte. Construction of one of the first converter stations for TenneT started in April 2025. The new station will be located in the middle of the port of Rotterdam, right next to APM Terminals Maasvlakte II.
The converter station forms a crucial link between the offshore wind farms and the Dutch high-voltage grid. Here, direct current (525 kV) is converted to alternating current (380 kV) so that it is suitable for connection to the national grid. In collaboration with various partners, TenneT will build several of these stations by 2030.
Our work
Severfield is responsible for the delivery and assembly of the steel structures. This is being done in close collaboration with BAM Infra Nederland. The civil engineering work also includes the construction of the buildings, building-related installations and site layout.
TenneT's innovative 2GW Programme
The converter station is part of TenneT's 2GW Programme, an innovative approach by TenneT Netherlands. By using a single cable system, a single platform design and a single contract form, these stations can be realised more efficiently, quickly and sustainably. This will make it possible to transport larger quantities of sustainable energy from sea to land simultaneously in the future.
