Commissioned by TME Engineering, Severfield Steel Construction realized a mobile roof construction for a salt storage unit. This unit, with a storage capacity of 60,000 m3, is situated on the E.B.S. Laurenshaven terminal in the Botlek area in Rotterdam (NL).
Severfield Steel Construction was responsible of both the design and the construction. The mobile hatches were designed in close cooperation with TME. By placing the tubes in the trusses at a 45º angle, the accumulation of salt on the roof parts is minimised. The design has been optimised for the application of the C5M coating, which complies with the highest corrosivity class.
Mobile roof parts
The salt storage unit consists of two concrete bunkers on top of which six mobile roof parts are placed. The dimensions of the roof parts are approximately 27 by 32 metres with a height between 5.5 and 8.5 metres. Every hatch can be moved as a whole and can be opened separately for the efficient loading and unloading of the salt. The hatches have been provided with motoric driven wheels, which run over rails mounted on both sidewalls of the unit.
Highest level of pretreatment
The steel structure has been produced according to the highest level of pretreatment, P3. This means that welds have a smooth finish, welding spatter has been removed and cutting edges have a round finishing in order to guarantee a longer lifetime of the C5M coating. The steel structure was pre-assembled into large parts, some of which weighed up to 16 tonnes per piece. With a 250 tonnes crane these were placed on the concrete hull.
