We were commissioned by Van Wijnen Gorredijk for the const ruction of the stadium for football club SC Cambuur in Leeuwarden, which has a seating capacity of 15,000. The multifunctional stadium houses training and commercial spaces for rental.
In the stadium, 80% of all beam steel consists of Arcelor Mittal's XCarb® recycled and renewably produced beam steel. This steel is produced using 100% renewable energy and 100% scrap. Compared to the use of conventional beam steel, this results in a savings of over 285,000 kilograms of CO2 equivalent. This is roughly equivalent to the emissions of over 160 diesel cars driving 10,000 kilometers on an annual basis.
Severfield Steel Construction was commissioned to supply and assemble the more than 1,746 tons of steel for the stadium, including the 30-meter-long roof trusses, floor beams and four lighting columns. The steel structure was built floor by floor, with the steel mounted between the concrete. Because the connection between concrete and steel often causes problems, we chose a different approach for this project. After mounting the steel, the connections were first cast with concrete, after which the bolts were attached. As Van Wijnen and Severfield worked closely together in the preliminary phase, we were able to contribute ideas about the design of the steel structure and the execution of the construction at an early stage.
