Project Eilanden West in Muiden consists of 22 modern villas designed by Courage Architects. The design is characterized by the use of a lot of steel and glass, which provides ample daylight in the homes and a view of the surrounding nature. The homes were built along the IJmeer on the site of a former gunpowder factory called De Krijgsman Muiden. Ufkes built the homes on behalf of KNSF Vastgoed.
Severfield Steel Construction supplied and assembled the steel structures, the various types of cladding and the hollow-core slabs for the project. Each type of house has its own facade finish of pre-painted steel or sustainable wood composite. The use of steel not only allows for the enormous expanses of glass, but also offers the possibility of a free layout for each villa.
Because the steel structure of the villas remains in sight, permanent stability bracing could hardly be applied. That is also the reason why many tubes, zinc-magnesium (aka Magnelis) galvanized flashings and Willems anchors were used. This brought along some challenges in designing the connections. To prevent damage to the coatings, the use of temporary bracing was kept to a minimum.
