Since 2007, APM Terminals has been operating in the port of Tangier, Morocco. In order to be able to handle more volume and to offer better services to large container vessels, the Belgian Willemen Group constructed a completely new container terminal. In assignment of Willemen Groep Severfield supplied the reefer racks and reefer safety tunnels for the terminal.
The terminal, which is strategically located at the Street of Gibraltar, covers 53 hectares with a 1,200 metres long quay. Willemen Group realised the complete construction of the terminal. In assignment of Willemen Group, Severfield supplied 42 reefer racks and 44 reefer safety tunnels.
Reefer racks
The primary purpose of a reefer rack is to supply stacked refrigerated containers with power in a safe and efficient manner. A typical reefer rack design consists of a main steel structure with multiple levels, each fitted with access platforms. The platforms are fully enclosed with protective fencing and can be reached via integrated staircases.
Reefer safety tunnels
The purpose of a reefer safety tunnel is to provide protected access to the reefer racks. By separating pedestrian routes from the container stacking area, terminal personnel can avoid potentially hazardous situations. For this project, we supplied a total of 44 safety tunnels.
