The reefer racks were installed at the 167-hectare terminal, which has the potential to expand to a total capacity of approximately 4.5 million TEU. The most commonly used containers are 40-foot units (2 TEU), primarily deployed for transport by container vessels and trucks.
In 2013, Severfield supplied and installed 80 reefer racks for APM Terminals at Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Our scope included both civil and electrotechnical works. The project was commissioned by construction consortium TigeR, comprising GMB, Dura Vermeer, and Imtech. Following the successful completion of the project, Severfield was awarded a subsequent contract for the realisation of an additional 40 reefer racks.
Reefer Racks
The primary purpose of a reefer rack is to supply stacked refrigerated containers with power in a safe and efficient manner. A typical reefer rack design consists of a main steel structure with multiple levels, each fitted with access platforms. The platforms are fully enclosed with protective fencing and can be reached via integrated staircases.
Reefer safety tunnels
The purpose of a reefer safety tunnel is to provide protected access to the reefer racks. By separating pedestrian routes from the container stacking area, terminal personnel can avoid potentially hazardous situations. For this project, we supplied a total of 168 safety tunnels.
